Learn how successful coaches started out and learn from their success!
Name: Lauren Dobey
Location: New York City, NY
Q. Why did you become a coach?
I already had a very successful consulting business and moving into business coaching seemed like an obvious and natural evolution for me. I became a business coach to empower women to break free of norms and limitations and create an authentic and profitable business on their own terms. I saw my mom work in a job that she hated but it provided her “stability” so she didn’t feel comfortable starting over and finding fulfilling work and it broke my heart to see. It’s important to me that women create the kind of freedom in their lives that they really truly want. Whether that’s to make more money, travel more or be able to spend more time with their families (or all of that!) then that’s what I want to see my clients bring into actualization.
Q. Aside from coaching what do you love doing?
I’m a bit of a free-spirited, adventure-seeker and I love to travel! So much so that I had to have pages sewn into my passport because I ran out of space! Aside from coaching and running my successful consulting business, you’ll find me traveling the world, surfing, scuba-diving and visiting museums. Over the next 4 months I’ll be going to Dominican Republic, Mexico and Belize for relaxation, surfing and adventures.
Q. What was the scariest thing about starting your business?
The unknown. And the learning curve. There are so many new things you need to learn to run your business especially with all of the technology. It made me want to pull my hair out in the beginning. But over time, and with the right guidance, things become much easier, smoother and less daunting.
Q. What would you tell someone who is just starting out as a coach?
Make sure you infuse your personality into your business. Follow your intuition and don’t be afraid to try new things until it feels right. Just because you see others having success following a specific formula doesn’t mean that you need to follow the same, exact formula that they did. Your business journey will not be linear and that’s okay.
I also believe that building a successful business is dependent on the right mindset and the right business systems and structures in place. Entrepreneurship can be a bumpy road and at times can feel isolating, so I always recommend hiring a coach or surrounding yourself with other supportive women in a mastermind or having a business BFF that you can lean on.
Q. What is the best thing about your business?
The freedom that it allows me. I love being my own boss, creating my own schedule and having the ability to work with amazing women from all around the world.
Q. What exciting plans are you working on at the moment?
I’m doing monthly webinars where I partner up with other awesome businesswomen where we share our take on what it means to be authentic in our business and life. I just did one with a style coach where we shared how to build an authentic business and wardrobe. In a few weeks I’ll be doing one with a copywriter on how to attract ideal clients and make more money by being yourself and sharing your experiences. We really shine a light on how important it is to show up authentically in all aspects of your business and life so that you can stand out in the market.
